Event Types

The Context Suite uses a set of core event types to provide a standardized framework for capturing user interactions. Each type corresponds to a distinct, meaningful action. Using these correctly is the first step to creating a clean, reliable, and powerful data stream.

This section provides a high-level overview of each core event type. For detailed implementation guides, see Getting Started, and for property definitions, see Core Properties.

Track

The track event is the workhorse of your analytics and is used to record any custom action a user performs that you want to measure. Unlike the other specialized event types, track is versatile and can represent anything from a button click to a file download or a comment submission.

The key to using track effectively is to establish a clear and consistent naming convention for your events (e.g., Object Verb-Past-Tense, like Article Completed). For predefined events that unlock powerful analytics, explore The Event Bible.

2  productId: 'product-123',
3  category: 'Apparel'
4});

Page

The page event is used specifically to record when a user views a page on your website. This is fundamental for tracking user journeys, understanding navigation flows, and analyzing content engagement. In most single-page applications, you will need to call this function manually as the user navigates between virtual pages.

  plan: 'Enterprise'
});

Screen

The screen event is the mobile app equivalent of the page event. It should be called whenever a user views a specific screen or view within your mobile application. It allows you to analyze navigation patterns, feature adoption, and user engagement within your app.

  section: 'Notifications'
});

Identify

The identify event is one of the most important calls you'll make. Its purpose is to associate all the actions a user is performing with a unique, known identity. You should call identify when a user signs up, logs in, or updates their profile information. This call links their anonymous activity to a userId and attaches traits (like name, email, or subscription plan) to their profile.

javascript
1jitsu.identify('user-97980', {
2  email: 'sara.smith@example.com',
3  name: 'Sara Smith'
4});

Group

The group event is used to associate an individual user with a larger group or organization. This is essential for B2B applications where you need to analyze behavior at the company or account level, not just the individual user level. Calling group links a userId to a groupId and allows you to set traits for the entire group (like company name, industry, or employee count).

1jitsu.group('org-54321', {
2  name: 'Global Tech Inc.',
3  industry: 'Software'
4});

Alias

The alias event has a very specific and critical function: to merge two previously separate user identities. This is most commonly used to connect a user's anonymous activity (tracked with an anonymousId) to their known identity (the userId) after they sign up or log in for the first time. This ensures that all pre-authentication activity is correctly attributed to the final user profile, creating a complete and unbroken user journey.
